Ytterbium lumps are silver-white, lustrous soft metals with excellent ductility and relatively low hardness. They are prone to slow oxidation in air. Due to their ability to change oxidation states, ytterbium typically exists in +3 or +2 oxidation states, and reduction distillation or wet reduction methods are often used in the purification process. The oxide of ytterbium is white, the divalent salts are green, and the trivalent salts are colorless. Ytterbium also has applications in nuclear reactions, particularly its isotope 170Tm, which is used in X-ray emission.
